The Mount Scopus Department of Emergency Medicine receives approximately 53,000 patients annually, mostly from the northern area of Jerusalem. Besides major trauma and surgical subspecialities (such as neurology and cardiology) the department provides medical care for most emergencies.
A special geriatric treatment service is also part of the department which cares for patients over 70, also providing evaluations of this increasingly expanding population of patients.
The Department of Emergency Medicine is also acts as a teaching facility for medical and nursing students from a variety of hospitals. Sixth year medical students attend in groups of two throughout the academic year and learn how to treat medical emergencies. The department provides two to three month residencies for family physicians and residents in Internal Medicine. Each week, two or three soldiers undergoing medical courses come to the department for instruction from the nursing team.
A patient arriving at the emergency room has a file opened for him at reception and receives an information sheet. In the pediatric emergency room, patients receive a sticker saying "I was a hero/heroine".
