The Pediatric Ward, the Pediatric Day Care and most of the Pediatric Specialty Clinics are located in the Mother and Child Pavilion of the Hadassah University Hospital. The pavilion is a modern, state of the art, friendly facility, and excels with an inviting atmosphere for the children. There is a new Center for Pediatric Emergency Medicine in a new and very comfortable building and a new unique Metabolic Diagnostic Center.
The Department serves also as a multidisciplinary center for the diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic pediatric diseases. The diagnostic tests and the therapeutic approaches are amongst the most modern in the world. Senior Pediatricians who are experts in many subspecialties, together with the residents of the department, work in complete harmony with pediatric surgeons, orthopedists, heart surgeons, ear, nose and throat specialists, ophthalmologists, urologists, dentists, and many other specialists from the Hadassah University Hospital and from the Hebrew University Medical School, all of whom are specialists in treating children in their respective fields.
The multi-disciplinary approach is practiced by the medical staff, the nursing staff, the social workers, dieticians, psychologists, physiotherapists, teachers and more. The Department is therefore well-known for its warm and caring approach to the sick child and his family.
As being part of a University Hospital, the department runs a training program for residents in Pediatrics as well as fellowships for physicians in a variety of subspecialties. In addition the department is involved in teaching medical students and in basic and clinical research.
The Department of Pediatrics, Ein Kerem is in constant process of development, thus providing an answer to the growing needs of the community. By the year 2006 three additional floors will be built to the Mother and Child Pavilion. The number of in-patient beds as well as the Ambulatory Services, Clinics and Day Care Services will reach their full capacity and the Mother and Child Pavilion will be one of its kinds in quantity and quality of care provided.
The Pediatric Ward treat children and infants, with a wide variety of chronic and acute diseases, including AIDS, hematological, pulmonary, infectious, immune deficiency, cardiological, gastrointestinal, nutritional disorders and liver diseases, auto-immune, immunological and allergic disorders, endocrinological disorders, neurological muscle, renal, genetic, metabolic, dermatological diseases, nutritional disorders, failure to thrive, developmental disorders. Also are treated, infants who need special attention prior to complicated heart surgery as well as post-operative care.
Children are admitted for hospitalization, in emergency cases, by way of the Emergency Room, or through elective hospitalization after being examined by a senior pediatrician from the out-patient clinic. The Department of Pediatrics treats not only children living in greater Jerusalem, but also children with complicated medical problems throughout Israel and the Palestinian Authority.
The well trained and experienced Nursing Staff of the Department has a special and unique approach to hospitalized children. Together with the Social Services and Pedagogic teams they aim to make the hospitalization time more pleasant, enjoyable, and productive for the child and his family. The Pedagogic team's methods of treatment comprises of music therapy, drama, arts and crafts, cooking and baking, teaching computer skills and has also other special enrichment programs.
