New - Electro-Magnetic Technology in Computer Guided Joint Replacement Surgery

06/06/2006

The Hadassah hospitals in Jerusalem have been using recently innovative Electro-Magnetic Technology in computer guided joint replacement surgeries. This new technology further improves the precision of the procedure, and may also shorten the time of recovery and hospitalization.

This is an additional improvement of the innovative technology' that enables the performance of computer guided joint replacement surgeries. Hadassah is a world leading medical center in using the computer guidance in orthopedic operations. The giant American corporations "Zimer" and "Medtronics" which developed these technologies, chose Hadassah in Jerusalem as a Betta site to use them.

Most medical centers which perform computer guided surgeries, use electro-optic technology. This forces the surgeons to constantly keep a continuous line of vision between the computer and the place of operation on the patient's body, which forces the surgeons to change their location during the operation, and prolongs it.

The new electro-magnetic technology is friendlier to the surgeons. They don't have to take into consideration the location of the computer during the operation.

"Using this new technology keeps Hadassah at the top of medical centers in the world that perform advanced orthopedic surgeries", say Prof. Iri Liebergall, head of the orthopedic departments at Hadassah, and Dr. Yoav Matan, director of the joint replacement center at Hadassah university Mt. Scopus hospital. "We are proud that corporations such as "Zimer" and "Medtronigs" continue to consider Hadassah a world leading medical center for implementation of the most advanced technologies in orthopedic surgeries in general, and trauma surgeries in particular".

The joint replacement unit ay Hadassah Mt. Scopus performs some 600 joint replacements a year. 230 out of them . are knee replacements.

The new technology was already used in 5 surgeries.
