Head, Thrombosis and Hemostasis Unit
Department of Hematology
Hadassah University Hospital
Ein-Karem, Jerusalem
Prof. David Varon was born in Israel and trained at the Tel Aviv University, where he received his MD diploma in 1976.
He did his medical residency at Kaplan Hospital, and concurrently, performed his basic science project at the Weizman Institute.
He was a Fellow in Hematology in a research capacity at New York University from 1981-1983, where he worked with the highly respected and renowned expert in blood clotting, Dr. Simon Karpatkin on the antigenic epitopes of ITP platelets. They were the first to establish the GPIIb-IIIa as an antigen in this disease.
He returned to Israel 1984-1987, where he completed his clinical training in Hematology in Kaplan Hospital.
Following this, he again returned to the United States, to work for 2 years at the Scripps Institute in La Jolla, California (1990-1991).
From 1987 to 2000, he was the Deputy Director of the National Hemophelia Center at Sheba Medical Center, and from 1998-2001, he was the director of the Blood Banking and Transfusion Service at Sheba Medical Center. As such, Prof. Varon has a vast amount of clinical experience with treating blood clotting disorders from which to draw upon.
He holds the academic rank of Senior Lecturer from the Tel Aviv University and Associate Professor from the Hebrew University, Jerusalem.
In 2001, Prof. Varon was recruited to head the Thrombosis and Hemostasis Unit of Hadassah Medical Organization, and he has already attained the status of a highly valued member of our Staff. He has a major input into the management of patients with disorders of bleeding, and in addition, of patients with hypercoagulable states.
His expertise is called upon in his role of consultant to many of the hospital’s inpatient departments. In particular, he has a close working relationship with the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department, which frequently seeks his advice in the management of coagulation problems in pregnant and postpartum patients.
He has a very active outpatient clinic, treating patients who require short or long term anticoagulation. He is also an expert on the treatment of hereditary and acquired bleeding disorders.
He has extensive teaching responsibilities lecturing to 4th and 6th year students.
