Clinical Research Review
1. Pediatric Nephrology:
· 1970 – Present- One of the first pediatric nephrologists to perform hemodialysis in a small infant with manual equipment (prior to the introduction of automatic hemodialysis equipment for children)
· One of the first pediatric nephrologists to start CAPD (Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal dialysis) in Bedui children in their tent.
· The only pediatric nephrologist of the two pediatric departments of the Hadassah University Hospital (Ein-Karem and Mt. Scopus) to teach pediatric nephrology to 4th and 6th year medical students and to medical residents and fellows.
2. Child Abuse and Neglect:
· In 1970, the first case of child abuse was revealed in Jerusalem and was published in Harefuah,(reference#2) only 4 years after child abuse had been recognized as a medical entity. The term "child abuse" had to be introduced to the social services and to the judiciary establishment, and the concept child abuse had to be taught to medical, nursing and social work students, to registered nurses and physicians in the hospital. Gradually this teaching activity grew to cover pediatricians, nurses, well-baby nurses and social workers in all the medical systems in Jerusalem, followed by soon becoming a corner stone in teaching medical issues of child and sex abuse to the police and to pediatric investigators in police courses. This activity was expanded to the Ministry of Justice in trying to adjust the attitude odf judges and lawyers to this "new concept" and to the long acting mental maleffect of abuse and neglect, even with minimal or no physical findings at hand.
· Established the Committee for Child Protection at the Hadassah University Hospital in Ein–Karem with the cooperation of a social worker, a pediatric nurse, a pediatric psychiatrist and a clinical psychologist. This committee became the main center in Jerusalem for referral of children from the Police and from social establishments, covering the Hadassah Emergency Room every day and night of the year on a voluntarily vasis. This activity became a model for other hospitals in the country
· Another undertaking is appearing in court as an expert witness for the state in defending these children against their perpetraitors
· Advisor for the Ministry of Health on the issue of Child Abuse, and member of several policy and investigation committees.
