Current Interests and Research

I have performed numerous laparoscopic and open operations on benign and malignant diseases of the esophagus and stomach. I have specialized in laparoscopic procedures for achalasia (laparoscopic myotomy) and for gastro-esophageal reflux disease (laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication).

As a research fellow with the Department of Surgery, at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles I was exposed to the unique considerations of foregut surgery, i.e. surgery of the esophagus and stomach. My research focused in two fields: The occurrence and significance of specific manometric findings (namely hypertensive swallow responses in the distal esophagus) in patients with gastro-esophageal reflux disease and respiratory symptoms; and the typical manometric, endoscopic and radiographic findings of failed anti-reflux surgery and their correlation to anatomical, functional and symptomatic parameters.

I reported on the indications for partial gastrectomy as the initial surgical treatment of morbidly obese patients with significant risk factors and on the rare occurrence of achalasia and obesity.
