The department of vascular surgery at Hadassah Ein Kerem was established as an independent department in 1974.

The surgical staff includes three senior surgeons who are specialists in general surgery and  vascular surgery, a  resident in vascular surgery, and a resident in general surgery during his rotation period.

The Vascular Diagnostic Laboratory of the department, serves all medical wards of both Ein Kerem and Mount Scopus Hadassah Hospitals.   It also serves many ambulatory  patients referred from other hospitals and infirmaries in Jerusalem and all over the country.

Activities of the laboratory include:

·         Diagnosis of peripheral  arterial occlusive disease

·         Diagnosis of extracranial cerebrovascular disease

·         Diagnosis of peripheral venous disease and arterio-venous malformations

The patients in the department of vascular surgery are managed in close cooperation with the team of the Interventional Radiology Unit of the hospital.

Examinations are performed by the state of the art methods of modern vascular surgery : Diagnostic angiography, Spiral CT and Magnetic Resonance Imaging.

A wide range of vascular reconstructive procedures are performed, including:

(1). Endarterectomy of the carotid arteries and replacement of the internal carotid artery with autologous and synthetic grafts.

(2). Repair of abdominal aortic aneurysms and thoracoabdominal aneurysms.

(3). Repair of peripherial aneurysms (femoral, popliteal  and subclavian art’s).

(4). Endovascular aortic aneurysms repair (evar) of infrarenal abdominal aortic aneurysms and aneurysms of the descending thoracic aorta.

(5). Aorto-iliac and aortofemoral bypass for aorto-iliac-occlusive-disease.

(6). Femoro-popliteal and femoro-tibial bypass for lower limb ischaemia.

(7). Aorto-mesenteric bypass (celiac art. And superior mesenteric art.) For intestinal ischemia.

(8). Portocaval, mesocaval and splenorenal shunts for portal hypertension.

(9). Vascular access for dialysis patients and peritoneal dialysis for ESRD (End Stage Renal Disease).

(10). Decompression surgery for thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS).

(11). Removal of primary vascular tumors and invasive vascular tumors.

(12). Reconstruction of vascular injuries (perforating, blunt  trauma and iatrogenic vascular injuries).

(13). Thrombolytic therapy of occluded vessels.

(14). Thoracic and lumbar sympathectomies for Buerger’s disease, Hyperhidrosis and Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD).

(15). Stripping of varicose veins.

The department has gained much experience in vascular trauma. The hospital serves as a medical center for the Israel Defense Forces. The multi disciplinary treatment is presently interacted through the Trauma Unit staff.

The department serves the cardiology wards of Ein Kerem, Mount Scopus and Bikur Holim hospitals regularly and treats all catheterization complications, such as: repair of pseudo-aneurysms and revascularization of acute ischemic extremities.

In recent years a new collaboration has been established with the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery, performing:

- Combined coronary artery bypass with carotid endarterectomy for patients suffering from concomitant coronary artery disease and carotid stenosis,

- Repair of thoraco abdominal aneurysms, using "adjuct" measures: (cerebrospinal fluid drainage (csf) and distal aortic perfusion).
