Ambulatory Treatment Unit
(Outpatient)
Unit director: Dr. Beatrice Uzieli
The aim of the ambulatory unit is to provide treatments to cancer patients who do not require extended hospitalization: Most chemotherapy treatments can now be given in an outpatient framework, and generally take between a few minutes to several hours. Longer treatments, which last for over eight hours, can be given on long hospitalization days (presently, Mondays and Wednesdays). On these days, treatment is administered until 7:00 PM.
Chemotherapy treatments given for over 24 hours can be administered by a special pump, which is hooked up to the patient and enables him to live a normal life. The patient comes to the ambulatory unit to start the treatment and to disconnect at the end of treatment.
Many patients receive additional treatments besides chemotherapy at the unit, such as giving blood, various infusions and more.
The unit also treats patients who are in need of urgent treatments:
The unit serves during the day as an emergency room – patients of the department who suffer from a severe and unclear event or from side effects of the treatment or phenomena associated with the cancer itself, can arrive at the unit for an examination during the day even without an appointment . From the unit, they will be referred for further examinations or hospitalized if necessary.
