Maternity

The wide variety of ethnic origin, cultural background and religious persuasion among women giving birth at Hadassah-Mount Scopus has led the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics to adopt a very liberal approach. "Natural" birth, Lamaze and Reed are among the range of acceptable preparations for labor and delivery, under the supervision of the Department's physicians and midwives.

Fathers are encouraged to participate with over 70 per cent staying with the mother during birth. Mothers can opt for analgesia; epidural anesthesia being the most popular.

High Risk and Intensive Care

High-risk pregnancies involving diabetes, high blood pressure, bleeding, premature contractions and premature rupture of the amniotic sac are supervised and treated. Of infants born in the Department, 7 to 10 percent require intensive care for long or short periods; they are hospitalized in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

Gynecology

The main service of this section is gynecological investigation and surgery. Among the most common procedures are hysterectomies, therapeutic D&Cs for heavy bleeding and miscarriages, laparoscopic investigation of infertile couples, laparoscopic surgery, surgery for urinary incontinence, emergency surgery and primary and secondary gynecological oncology surgery following chemotherapy.

IVF Unit

The in vitro fertilization (IVF) unit performs, with state of the art equipment, all the advanced techniques in the field. These include IVF, GIFT, embryo cryopreservation, oocyte donation and intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). The ICSI technique is also employed in conjunction with epididymal sperm aspiration (MESA) for males with obstruction of the genital tract. The unit performs preimplantation embryo biopsies for detecting sex, Rh factor, Tay-Sachs and Cystic Fibrosis.
