The Mount Scopus Emergency Department receives approximately 53. 000 patients per annum, mostly from the northern area of Jerusalem. Besides major trauma and surgical subspecialities (i.e. neuro and cardiac surgery) it provides medical care for most emergencies.

A special geriatric treatment service has been developed which cares for patients over 70 and also makes functional evaluations of this increasing population of patients.

The Emergency Department is also a teaching facility for medical and nursing students. Sixth year medical students attend in groups of two throughout the academic year. They learn how to deal with medical emergencies. The service also provides two to three months residence to family physicians and residents in Internal Medicine. These days our department has been enabled to provide residence in Emergency Medicine.
