Prof. Daniel Shouval, Director of the Liver Unit at the Hadassah Ein-Kerem University Hospital, received last Friday the annual Recognition Award of the European Association for the Study of Liver (EASL), during the Association's 44th annual conference in Copenhagen, Denmark, in front of more than 7,000 colleagues from all over the world.
The EASL Secretary General said Prof. Shouval was awarded as a recognition of his "outstanding scientific contribution and continuous action in the field of liver diseases". Shouval is the first Israeli to receive this highly prestigious award.
A former Dean of the Hebrew University-Hadassah School of Medicine, Prof. Shouval is a world renowned specialist in the study of liver diseases, and is involved in the development of several vaccinations to Hepatitis. He and his colleagues initiated the first universal vaccination program against hepatitis A for toddlers, leading to a 95 percent decline in its incidence in adults in Israel.
A former Dean of the Hebrew University-Hadassah School of Medicine , Prof. Shouval serves as Professor of Medicine there, as well as a visiting Professor at the Yeshiva University’s Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York. During his career, he held similar positions at the Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston and the University of Paris in France, and worked in several liver research centers in the United Kingdom, France and the United States.
Prof. Shouval is the recipient of several national and international awards and the author of over 200 publications and chapters in medical text books. He served as President of the European Association for the Study of the Liver and Chairman of the Educational Committee of the European Association for the Study of the Liver. In this capacity, he became involved in education about Hepatology and the prevention of liver diseases worldwide.
A permanent adviser to the European Viral Hepatitis Prevention Board and the World Health Organization, Prof. Shouval was Associate Editor of The Journal of Liver Transplantation and member of the editorial boards of several leading hepatology journals.
